Bustos Continues Cheri on Shift in Peoria and Fulton Counties On Thursday

(Canton, IL)  --  The Represenative from the 17th Congressional District in Illinois participated in another Cheri on Shift.  Congresswoman Cheri Bustos made stops in Peoria, Canton and Wee-Ma-Tuk just west of Canton on Thursday.  While in Canton stopped at Spoon River Electric before traveling to Wee-Ma-Tuk where Bustos started her 72nd Cheri on Shift installing lights for Spoon River Electric.  Bustos said that something she has learned since she started is there is a lot of good people are out there trying to support their families. Bustos spent the morning in Peoria at PMP Fermentation Products, a manufacturer of gluconate. While in Canton and Wee-Ma-Tuk yesterday afternoon, Bustos helped begin a project to convert mercury vapor/high pressure sodium lights to LED lights.

Illinois State Police To Participate In Saturation Saturday

(Macomb, IL)  --  Illinois State Police District 14 Commander, Captain Jon Dively, has announced plans for Saturation Saturday enforcement. The enforcement initiative will occur on Saturday, August 25, 2018 in conjunction with the Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign which runs from August 20 through September 4. Saturation Saturday is a statewide initiative with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to raise awareness on the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, and increase enforcement to remove and arrest individuals driving under the influence. Troopers across the state will join county and local law enforcement agencies for increased enforcement during the evening hours of August 25 and early morning hours of August 26. State of Illinois sells $965 million in bonds

(Springfield, IL)  --  The State of Illinois has sold $965,770,000 in General Obligation Refunding Bonds, Series A and Series B of September 2018. The $641,160,000 Series A of September 2018 were a takeout of the State’s $600 million in 2003B variable rate bonds and the termination of five swaps associated with those bonds. The refunding will eliminate all the variable rate exposure and remove the highest-cost debt from the State’s capital market programs. Proceeds from the $324,610,000 Series B Bonds of September 2018 will be used to refund several series of previously issued general obligation bonds of the State. Total debt service savings of $33,643,047, or 5.89 percent of present-value savings were derived from the Series B Bonds, and each individual bond selected for refunding in this series had in excess of 3 percent present-value savings to the State. The State received bids from 87 institutional investors totaling $4,166,070,000 in orders, or a 4.3 times subscription for the bo

As the Program Support Person, Peters plans and schedules events for the individuals served both inside and outside the facility. She has been very busy this summer planning events such as trips to the zoo, shopping, library, fire station, local parks, the movie theater, Camp Big Sky, and the orchard, to name a few. Peters also brought in individuals for educational events, a pampering day, and craft activities. Peters is dependable, flexible and fills in wherever she is needed. Four Wounded, One Arrested In Quad Cities Stabbing (Rock Island, IL)  --  A Rock Island man is looking at a host of felony charges after police say he went on a stabbing spree Tuesday.  Prosecutors yesterday filed charges against 29-year-old Dmarlo Bryant.  Investigators say he stabbed a 44-year-old woman, a six-year-old boy, and a 19-year-old woman, and bit a 22-year-old man.  But they are not saying why.  Police say none of the injuries are life threatening. McLean County Coroner Calls Penis Harvesting Story Fake (Bloomington, IL)  --  The coroner in Bloomington is assuring people that no one in her office is harvesting penises.  McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis this week started spreading the word after she says a fake news website published a story about someone who doesn't work in her office stealing men's private parts.  Davis says the phones rang off the hook at her office after the story first started making the rounds. USDA Authorizes Additional Counties for Emergency Haying and Grazing of Conservation Reserve Program Acres

(Springfield, IL)  --  U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency State Executive Director William Graff recently announced that Brown, Fulton, Kankakee, Knox, Mercer, Pike, and Schuyler Counties are now authorized for emergency haying and grazing use of Conservation Reserve Program acres for fiscal year 2018. Adams, Hancock, McDonough, and Warren Counties were authorized on August 2, 2018. Henderson County was authorized on August 9, 2018. FSA's fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30. Currently, Adams, Brown, Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Kankakee, Knox, McDonough, Mercer, Pike, Schuyler, and Warren Counties have received emergency haying and grazing approval. The emergency grazing period for these counties will begin on the date of authorization and end September 30, 2018. Western Illinois Seeing The Worst Of Illinois' Drought

(Undated)  --  For all the water in the Mississippi River, Illinois' western edge is seeing the worst of the state's drought.  The latest drought report from the USDA and the National Weather Service, shows that the strip of western Illinois from north of the Quad Cities to just north of the Metro East is the driest in the state.  There are a handful of other areas, including in southern and central Illinois that are abnormally dry.

​Governor signs bill creating the AIM HIGH college scholarship program

(Undated)  --  Governor Bruce Rauner has signed a law creating a new scholarship program for college student in Fulton County as well as through out Illinois.  "AIM High" is a $25-million effort to help keep the best and the brightest here in Illinois says Illinois State Board of High Education President Al Bowman. The $25-million from the state will be matched by Illinois Public Universities. The Governor also signed a law setting up a task force to help colleges better gauge the career interests of high schoolers.

Spoon River College Holds Orientations for New Students

(Canton, IL)  --  ​Orientations for almost 200 new students and for 81 nursing students were held August 14 and 15 in both Canton and Macomb. Students were provided with information about financial aid, tutoring and other services available in the Learning Resource Centers, disability support services, college policies, and more. Tours were given on both campuses, and Jessica Donku and Thomas Harris were the winners of the $100 Visa gift cards. Nursing students, who were required to attend a two-day orientation, also participated in several break-out sessions where topics included time management, study skills, and lab skills requirements. In addition, all nursing students were required to be fingerprinted.

Two Groups Celebrate Hands-Only CPR Milestone

(Undated)  --  Two groups are celebrating a milestone in a project that teaches people how to do hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation.  Danielle DeVito, a paramedic and American Heart Association volunteer, says 100-thousand people have now been trained on a nationwide network of 30 hands-only CPR kiosks across the country.  Here's why that's important. She says that if you find a person lifeless and unresponsive, you should call 911, then put two hands in the center of the chest and start hard and fast compression.  The Anthem Foundation has been working with the American Heart Association on the kiosk project.

USDA Offers Food Safety Tips For Tailgates And Back-To-School Lunches

(Washington, DC)  --  The USDA is offering food safety tips for tailgate parties and back-to-school lunches.  They start with thorough handwashing and include using two sets of utensils and cutting boards for meat and raw vegetables, cooking meat to the right temperature using a thermometer and refrigerating food after two hours.  The agency also suggests packing your child's perishable lunch with two frozen water bottles, or frozen fruits and veggies, because most schools don't offer refrigeration.  The CDC estimates that food-borne illness sends 128-thousand people to the hospital each year and causes three-thousand deaths.

Report: E-cigarette Use Can Double Risk Of Heart Attack

(Undated)  --  E-cigarette users are twice as likely to have a heart attack as people who don't smoke.  A University of California-San Francisco survey concludes that smoking e-cigarettes is no more safe than smoking regular cigarettes.  The study also showed that people who use both e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes are nearly five times more likely to suffer a heart attack.  The senior author of the report says smokers can immediately drop their risk of having a heart attack by stopping the use of either product.

Treatment, Not Trial For Illinois Man Accused In Waffle House Shooting (Nashville, TN)  --  The central Illinois man charged with killing four people at a Tennessee Waffle House isn't going to trial anytime soon.  A judge in Nashville yesterday found Travis Reinking unfit for trial.  The judge said he hopes that by getting Reinking treatment for schizophrenia, he will eventually be able to go to trial.  Police say Reinking killed four people during a shooting back in April. New Judge For Galva Man Accused Of Murder (Galesburg, IL)  --  A Knox County man facing a murder charge is getting a new judge.  Judge Anthony Vaupel yesterday took over James Love's murder trial.  Love is accused of shooting and killing Xavier Hartman to death back in June.  Love has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Western Illinois University To Try Beer Sales At Football Games

(Macomb, IL)  --  Tailgates and dorms won't be the only places to get a beer at Western Illinois University football games this year.  WIU's John Biernbaum said the school's food service provider will sell beer on the south side of the football stadium.  Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a law in 2016 to allow colleges and universities in the state to sell beer.  Biernbaum says beer sales will be a pilot program this year.

Jim Edgar Now Backing Chicago Casino

(Chicago, IL)  --  Former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar is changing his mind about a Chicago casino.  Edgar told the Chicago Sun Times yesterday that he sees more pluses than minuses from a casino in the state's largest city.  Edgar had said while he was in office that he didn't want casinos in any part of the state.  The former governor now says both Chicago and the state of Illinois could use the money from the casino.

Walmart, Anthem Partnering To Give Seniors More Access To OTC Meds

(Undated)  --  Walmart and health insurance giant Anthem are partnering to provide seniors with more access to over-the-counter drugs.  Starting in January, seniors enrolled in Anthem's Medicare Advantage plans will be able to use their insurance to pay for some over-the-counter medications at Walmart.  They'll also be able use it for things like pain relievers and first aid supplies.  The partnership aims to help people cut their medical expenses while drawing more shoppers to Walmart.  Seniors will be able to use their Anthem benefits for items online and in stores. Walmart operates several stores in west central Illinois, including in Canton.

(Undated)  --  Corn and soybean progress is moving right along according to the lastet crop report.  After a week of about normal temperatures and rainfall, 95-percent of soybeans are setting pods says Illinois Crop Statistician Mark Schleusener. 94-percent of corn has reached the dough stage and 63-percent is in the dent stage.  76-percent of the corn crop is rated in good to excellent condition.  Statewide average topsoil moisture improved slight to eight-percent very short, 26-percent short, 63-percent adequate and three percent surplus.

(Macomb, IL)  --  Illinois State Police District 14 Commander, Captain Jon Dively, announces the addition of three new troopers to District 14 patrol. Troopers Tim Becket, Chris McClenning and Blake Ross were assigned to District 14 Macomb after graduating from the ISP Academy in Cadet Class 127. Trooper Becket graduated from WIU with a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration in 2017. He previously served as a deputy sheriff for the Schuyler County Sheriff’s office from 2016 to 2018. He currently resides in Macomb. Trooper McClenning graduated from Lincoln Land Community College with an associate’s degree in Liberal Arts in 2015. He previously served as an officer with the Beardstown Police Department, the South Jacksonville Police Department and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. He resides outside of Beardstown. EBay Starts New Online Auto Parts-Buying Plan

Illinois Looking For Snow Plow Drivers In August

(Springfield, IL)  --  It's still plenty hot, but the state of Illinois is already thinking about the ice and snow of winter.  The Illinois Department of Transportation earlier this month put out the request for snow plow drivers in west central Illinois as well as through out the state.  IDOT's Dominic Menenghetti says the state needs more drivers this year, but there are fewer drivers available.  If you have a Class A or B license and want to drive a plow, go to IDOT's website and apply.

New Law Could Mean Two Year License Plates In Illinois

(Springfield, IL)  --  There's good news for drivers, Illinois is looking at a two-year license plate renewal schedule.  But it won't happen for at least three years.  Governor Rauner signed a new law over the weekend that allows for two-year renewals, but not until 2021.  The law gives Illinois' Secretary of State time to figure out how to make an every other year renewal system work.

Illinois Lawmakers Want Answers About U Of I Innovation Network

(Urbana, IL)  --  The University of Illinois looks to be trying to get ahead of a legislative hearing into their innovation network.  The Champaign News Gazette reported yesterday that the school is readying a pair of forums into the proposed network in Chicago for later this month.  But the announcement of the forums came one day after lawmakers told school leaders to appear at their hearing later this month.  Champaign-area state Senator Chapin Rose says it's sad that lawmakers had to force the issue.

Canton Students Recognize For Academic Achievement

(Canton, IL)  --  The Canton Union School District 66 School Board held a special meeting on Monday night prior to the regularly scheduled board meeting.  The district recognized 42 that are sophomores, juniors or seniors this year who carried a 4.0 GPA last year. Board President Leonard Barnard said that the students recognized for academics also participate in extra curricular activites. The awards recognition was held in the auditorium at Canton High School last night.

Drug Charges Filed Against Canton Man (Canton, IL)  --  A Canton man is facing drug charges after being arrested over the weekend.  Authorities say they responded to an address in the 500 block of West Chestnut Street early Sunday evening at about 5:30 in regard to a male that was allegedly destroying the inside of the home with a hammer after receiving a complaint from a 32-year old Canton female.  The suspect, 36-year old Paul W. Slater, was taken to Graham Hospital to be evaluated.  Police say they found a small clear jar in his pocket that was determined to have methamphetamine in it after testing postive.  After being released from the hospital, Slater was later taken to the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown. Illinois Governor: Quincy Vets Home Work Moving At Accelerated Pace

(Quincy, IL)  --  Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner says the state is trying to hurry the repairs at the Quincy veterans home.  The governor told The Quincy Herald Whig yesterday that the work is moving at an 'accelerated pace.'  Illinois lawmakers earmarked 53 million-dollars for the outdated home.  The goal is to replace the water system that is linked to a Legionnaires outbreak.  But the governor says the first step is to buy the Sycamore Healthcare Center in Quincy and turn it into a temporary home for the veterans.

Thyroid Medicine Recall

(Washington, DC)  --  A thyroid medicine is being recalled because a Chinese manufacturer that made most of its ingredients failed inspection.  The voluntary national recall alert issued says that no "adverse events" are associated with its recall.  Officials say that patients should continue taking the medicine until they have proper replacements.  More than four-point-five percent of the U.S. population suffers from an under-active or over-active thyroid which can effect weight and mood.

Traffic Stop Results In Canton Womans Arrest (Canton, IL)  --  A traffic stop in Canton last week resulted in the arrest of a Canton woman.  Police say they stopped the vehicle in an alley in the 300 block betwen West Spruce and West Locust Streets on Monday night of last week. Officers say they observed 42-year old stephanie Wooddell driving the vehicle and knew she was wanted on a 2018 Fulton County Warrant for escape and then conducted the stop.  Wooddel was arrested and taken to the Canton Police Department where she was processed for the warrant.  She was unable to post bond.  Wooddell was later taken to the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown. The first measure gives hunters a new fashion choice in hopes of making themselves more visible says Governor Rauner. A handful of other states also allow hot pinnk for hunters. The second new law takes effect in January and cracks down on illegal hunting, especially the poaching of white-tailed bucks.

Netflix Isn't Adding Commercials, Despite Rumors

(Undated)  --  Netflix isn't adding commercials, it's just testing out video promotions between episodes and movies.  Many users were upset recently and reported seeing an increase in commercials they weren't able to skip.  But, the streaming company is setting the record straight.  The video promotions seen between movies and episodes can be skipped.  In a statement, Netflix said they are testing to see if showing recommendations between episodes helps members discover other content. 

State Police Remind Drivers Of Back To School

(Springfield, IL)  --  It's once again time to slow down and pay attention in school zones across Illinois.  The Illinois State Police are reminding drivers that kids are heading back to school.  Troopers say drivers need to slow down, get off their phones, stop for school buses, and be on the look-out for kids as they head back to class.  The State Police say they will be out on patrol in school zones across the state.

WIU School of Music Student Wins Prestigious National Piano Competition

(Macomb, IL)  --  Western Illinois University School of Music graduate student Gwangwon Park, of Macomb, was recently named the winner of the prestigious Atlantic Music Festival's annual piano competition in Maine. Acceptance into the summer program involves a video audition of at least three different works, with only 25 students accepted nationwide. A highlight of the one‐month music festival is a piano competition, open to all the festival's participants. The first round of the piano competition required a 30-minute video, with the faculty selecting five finalists. The final round of the competition was presented live for the public and required a Beethoven sonata and a work written after 1950. The winner of the competition won a monetary prize and the opportunity for a solo recital the final week of the festival. Quad Cities Zoo To Return Memorial Plaques

(Coal Valley, IL)  --  The Quad Cities' zoo is returning its memorial plaques.  Niabi Zoo Director Lee Jackson yesterday said that he realizes removing the plaques was a mistake, and he hopes that returning them will bring peace to everyone.  Zoo managers removed the plagues this summer after saying many of them were weathered and aged.  Jackson says he hopes to have all of the plaques back to their original locations by the end of the zoo's season.

Ziploc Bags Fond at Illini Bluffs School and A Park In Glasford With Imflammatory Message (Glasford, IL)  --  Authorities in Peoria County are investigating the finding of several Ziploc bags at Illini Bluffs School.  The bags contained candy and an inflammatory message.  School officials say that bags were also placed at the park in Glasford.  The Peoria County Sheriff's office was then contacted and law inforcement are continuing to investigate the matter.  If anyone has any information as to who might have placed the bags on school properety or in the Village of Glasford, contact the Peoria County Sheriff's Department by calling 1-309-697-8515. Forecasters Look Into Possible Fulton County Tornado

(Canton, IL)  --  Forecasters are expected to be back out in Fulton County to see just what kind of winds hit Smithfield and Fairview.  The county's emergency services agency says a small tornado may have touched down outside of Smithfield.  There are no reports of any major damage or injuries.

New law requires hospitals to have specially trained staff for victims of sexual assault.

(Undated)  --  Sexual assault victims will soon receive more specialized care when they go to the emergency room.  By 2022, hospitals must provide specially trained staff to all rape victims with in 90-minutes of arriving under a new state law. It was sponsored in the Illinois House by Representative Mike Unes who represents a portion of Fulton County including Canton. The Bill also lets young victims have an exam done at a locally approved pediatric center instead of the E.R. Unes says the goal is to make the whole process of going to the hospital and having evidence collected less traumatic for victims.

Illinois Included In States Seeing Measles Outbreak

(Springfield, IL)  --  Add Illinois to the list of states included in the latest measles outbreak.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yesterday said 107 people in 21 states, including Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, and Kansas, have been confirmed sick with the measles.  The CDC says most of the people who have gotten sick with the measles have not been vaccinated.

Kitten Shower Being Held Saturday

(Canton, IL)  --  The Humane Society of Fulton County will be holding a "Kitten Shower" this weekend.  Cory Willis said that in addition to the "Kitten Shower" there will also be a dog and cat food drive that will help fill there food pantry. The "Kitten Shower" will be taking place at Happy Hounds located at 416 West Locust Street, Suite 3 in Canton.  Adoption fees will be $60 for each kitten or two for $100. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip & registration, age appropriate vaccinations, FIV/FELV testing, flea treatment and de-worming. The "Kitten Shower" will be from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Walmart Reports Strong Second Quarter Results

(Undated)  --  Walmart is reporting very strong second quarter results.  The world's biggest retailer posted a 40-percent jump in e-commerce sales in the U.S. earlier this week, after a 33-percent bump in the first quarter.  Total revenue increased three-point-eight percent to 128-billion dollars in the quarter that ended July 31st.  Adjusted earnings came to a dollar-29 a share, beating analysts' estimates of a dollar-22.  All that good news pushed up Walmart's shares nearly ten-percent, to 99-14 in pre-market trading. Walmart operates several stores in west central Illinois, including one in Canton.

Plan For Possible Portillo's Restaurant In Davenport Moves Forward

(Davenport, IA)  --  There have been Portillo's restaurants built in Bloomington and in Peoria, now a plan to possibly bring a Portillo's restaurant to Davenport is getting ever so closer.  The Quad-City Times reports Davenport aldermen will debate the proposal again next week after talking about it last night.  The area near the new Costco store at East 53rd Street near Lorton Avenue is where the Portillo's would be if it's ultimately approved.

Glasford Man Facing Multiple Charges After Attempting To Elude Canton Police (Canton, IL)  --  A Glasford man is facing several charges after leading Canton police on a chase Monday night. Authorities say they received a complaint about a reckless driver in the area of Walmart on the north end of Canton.  Police say they spotted the vehicle in the parking lot at the store. Dispatch also told officers that the described vehicle, a blue Ford F150 pick up truck, had been reported as stolen out of South Pekin.  Officers say the vehicle was unoccupied in the parking lot at Walmart.  Officers spotted a man described by the complainant was wearing a blue tank top and tie dye shorts running from the store. He was able to get into the vehicle and get away even though officers say they told him to stop.  The suspect was identified as 35-year old Rickey D. Combs.  Combs left the parking lot at Walmart, heading southbound on North Main Street. He then immediately turned off on Marlee Drive.  Offic

Girl Scouts Announce New Cookie

(Undated)  --  Girl Scouts who live in Fulton County will be selling a new cookie next year.  They Girls Scounts have announced the Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie will be joining their 2019 line-up.  It will be the second gluten-free option to be offered, joining the Toffee-tastic cookies. The Caramel Chocolate Chip cookie will have caramel and semi-sweet chocolate chips with a hint of sea salt combined to create a sweet and salty taste in a chewy cookie.  There are now 12 different cookie options to choose from.
